Earth Sciences Institute of Shinyanga (ESIS) is a private Technical Institution registered by The National Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NACTVET), (Reg. No REG/SAT/158) to offer Certificates and Diploma in Exploration and Mining Geology plus “Petroleum Geology”.

The establishment of ESIS aims affirmatively at complementing the Government’s effort of improving the Petroleum and Mining sector and hence contributing to the national economy. It also complements the millennium goals of eradicating ignorance and poverty. One of the future plans of ESIS is to have best training curricula in a vast spectrum of Earth Sciences to include Mining, Mineral Processing, Gemology and Petroleum Geology, to mention a few.

An obvious fact that has been driving ESIS to embark on training technicians (NTAs) is that technicians (e.g. Geology, Mining, Mineral processing and gemology technicians) ratio to Geologists, Mining Engineers, Mineral Processing Engineers and Gemologists is quoted to be 1:5 (e.g. Mineral Resources Institute curriculum report, 2008), thus more technical personnel are needed in larger number at the order of 5 times more than the number required for professionals (or knowledge based professionals). Experience has also shown that, to date, the Petroleum and mining sector continues to employ non skilled technicians (in-service trained technicians) due to lack of enough qualified technicians that can assist Mining Engineers, Geologists or Mineral Processing Engineers.

In an effort to overcome this problem, we have pragmatically considered the facts mentioned above and compared these facts to a critical global economic crisis experienced few years ago, the impact of which is still being felt to date. It has been noted that although some small exploration and mining companies pulled out their investment capitals elsewhere in the world, yet, their investment in Tanzania has not recorded a significant change; implying that prosperity for the industry is still strong particularly for gold, diamond and related commodities as well as the in the Petroleum Industry. Whichever challenges may face the industry as was the case in 1930th and 2000th quality education remains to be one of the main solutions for sustainability of the industry and development of the respective countries. One of ESIS functions shall be to undertake researches in Geo-hazards and other Earth Science related field. The former has been marginalized by most Earth Science institutions in Tanzania. As a result, researches related to volcanic activities, earthquakes and related geo-hazards are mostly managed from outside Tanzania. ESIS intends to champion in this field in order to help the government in this area which does not attract most scientist as it is considered to be a non-paying line of research and it is also regarded as a costly line of research.
Location of the Institute: The location of this training institute has been chosen to be in Shinyanga-Tanzania because of importance of its geographical location. Shinyanga is located close to most of major mines in Tanzania (Williamson Diamonds Ltd in Mwadui, African Barrick Buzwagi and African Barrick Bulyanhulu in Kahama, Resolute (T) ltd in Nzega, Tulawaka gold mine in Biharamulo, Geita Gold Mine in Geita, just to mention a few). This has a lot of advantages when it comes to practical training for students and for interaction with key stake holders mentioned above. Furthermore, the government in Shinyanga has strongly supported this idea and has set forth a land for construction of the institute. In the future, we can have ESIS branches elsewhere in the country and abroad.
